YOUTH & COMMUNITY
The Western Pa Writing Project provides youth and community members with rich opportunities to write and to learn. For over twenty years, the WPWP has offered Young Writers Institutes for students in grades 4-8 and 9-12. We also sponsor many creative and professional writing events for teachers and parents, such as an annual Fall Writing Retreat, a Writing Renaissance, Poe*Art and Writing Marathons throughout the region.
If you love to write about your professional practice or poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, memoir, screenplays, graphic novels and digital narratives, you’ve come to the right place.
Each year hundreds of students participate in our writing camps and celebrations. In partnership with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the WPWP conducts a fall and winter Young Writers Institute downtown in the heart of the Cultural District. Each summer, the WPWP offers four popular Young Writers Institutes in Oakland, Mt. Lebanon and Pine-Richland.
Beginning in the fall of 2011, the WPWP will host the Scholastic Writing Awards competition for Alleghney County. Gold Key winners for the Allegheny region will advance to the national competition.
For more information about our writing programs, please browse this website and contact the WPWP office. Please also take a few minutes to enjoy some of the great writing produced by young writers throughout the region. You can read and respond to their work in our interactive digital anthologies on the right side of this page.
